An application for children to encounter mathematics in a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Helping children to develop confidence in their abilities and achieve a better academic performance. Math relies on both logic and creativity. With it, children learn to think abstractly, apply rules of logic and find relationships. While children’s self-esteem is built (6-12), problems with mathematics usually begin – especially with the concept of fractions.

Research shows that a very effective way for a child to learn is when the child shifts from three different stages: concrete, representational and abstract.

A Manipulative was designed, a model that helps perceive the mathematical concept through touch. With it, the child connects their own dots awakening a natural hunger for knowledge.

Representational

Visual lessons were design to encourage children to think abstractly, apply rules of logic and find relationships. The content is displayed in a playful way and with familiar objects to the user.

A set of games were designed, where the child responds to visual problems providing an answer in numeric notation, an abstract representation of the content.

The math-education of children in the middle-childhood is of particular relevance. Children in the age between 6 and 12 face a particularly sensitive time. While their self-esteem is built, problems with mathematics usually begin in this period – especially with the concept of fractions.

I decided to work with Math as it relies on both logic and creativity. Children learn to think abstractly, apply rules of logic, find relationships. It also helps them to see if such relationships contribute to the understanding of the original object.
